Press release March 31, 2010: Former Dutch Commander-in-chief Couzy questions ‘genocide’ Srebrenica

In response to today’s news that the Serbian parliament apologizes for the events in Srebrenica, notably without mentioning the word ‘genocide’, former general Hans Couzy questioned the determination of the genocide in a Dutch radio program this morning (BNR Nieuwsradio). Couzy, former Commander-in-chief of the Dutch ground forces at the time of the fall of the Srebrenica enclave and currently chairman of the Dutch Federation of Military Officers, indicated that certain jurists dispute that the events in Srebrenica qualify as genocide. In spite of the fact that the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice in The Hague determined that genocide indeed took place in Srebrenica, Mr. Couzy questioned the validity of that determination.

The Mothers of Srebrenica are shocked by Couzy’s statements, which they consider to be one more among the many statements that disregard the facts. Couzy’s statements are incomprehensible in view of the fact that the slaughter of nearly 10,000 citizens in Srebrenica is internationally recognised to constitute genocide. Even yesterday, in the civil proceedings brought by the Mothers of Srebrenica against the State of The Netherlands and the United Nations, the Court of Appeals in The Hague ruled that the fact that genocide occurred in Srebrenica is “a fact of common knowledge”. The Mothers of Srebrenica insist that former General Couzy retracts his statements and offers his apologies.

Recently, a former United States General voiced the opinion that the fall of Srebrenica was partially due to the presence of homosexuals in the Dutch army. This General has in the meantime retracted this statement and has apologised.
